RM of Longlaketon’s story
The Rural Municipality of Longlaketon No. 219 incorporated as a rural municipality on December 12, 1910. Its municipal office is in Earl Grey, and the villages of Craven, Earl Grey and Silton are surrounded by the RM, along with the localities of Fairy Hill and Gibbs.
Several heritage properties recall the area's earlier days. Longlaketon United Church, also called the Longlaketon Presbyterian Church, was built in 1886 and held church services until 1969. It now serves as the Longlaketon Community Hall.
Eddy School No. 1846, near Earl Grey, was built in 1922. The one-room schoolhouse taught students from 1922 to 1936 and again from 1943 to 1957. Zion (North Southey) Lutheran Church was built in 1926 by immigrants from the Austrian Empire, and it offered services in German until the 1960s.
